‘1923’ Season 2 Gets Huge Update on Final Episodes

‘Yellowstone’ prequel ‘1923’ reportedly eyes Austin for new season. This may be Texas’ next step into becoming a film hub.

The series connected to one of TV’s biggest western dramas to date may be on its way to Central Texas soon.

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel 1923 could be filming in Austin for its next season, the Austin Business Journal reports. A spokesperson for 101 Studios, the California-based production company, confirmed to ABJ that the show will be shooting at ATX Film Studios.

MySA reached out to 101 Studios and ATX Film Studios for comment but neither responded prior to publication. It’s unclear whether or not the entirety of the series will be shot at the South Austin studio since the first season of 1923 was filmed in Montana, Malta, South Africa and Kenya, according to IMDB.

1923 is one of two origin stories behind the Yellowstone Dutton family lineage, starring Helen Mirren, Harrison Ford and Brandon Sklenar, among others. The Golden Globe-nominated series was renewed by Paramount+ for a second season in February 2023.

Details are slim for this quiet Hollywood turned Texas production, but it wouldn’t be much of a surprise considering Austin’s rich film history and the Lone Star State’s most recent rise in the industry.

AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead filmed scenes all over Austin and used ATX Film Studios for nearly four years until 2021 when the show left for Georgia. This was due to the lack of film incentives compared to other states, ABJ reports.

This eventually led to the Texas Legislature allocating $200 million in film incentives for current projects, which was the most ever under the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program since 2008. However, critics believe this still may not be enough to compete with other popular filming areas like Hollywood, New Mexico and Georgia.

Sheridan, who was raised in Fort Worth, has helped boost Texas film incentives and Native Americans on screen through his work as one of the most successful TV show creators, the Dallas Morning News reported. His efforts have even got the attention of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick who tweeted a photo of Sheridan following a statement saying, “My goal is for Taylor to move all of his TV and movie production to Texas.”

Sheridan stars and produces hit shows like 1883 (the prequel of 1923), Sons of AnarchyTulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, and Lawmen: Bass Reeves. His upcoming projects include Landman that is filming in Fort Worth, and 6666 based on the Texas ranch featured in Yellowstone, which he owns.
