Yellowstone Spinoff Dutton Ranch Shocks Fans With Tons Of Behind-The-Scenes-Drama

TV is a group project, and sometimes intense creative friction leads to massive off-screen drama. In worst-case scenarios, it leads to abrupt departures and high-profile firings. In the case of the Yellowstone spin-off ‘Dutton Ranch,’ behind-the-scenes turmoil has boiled over, culminating in the shocking exit of showrunner Chad Feehan.

According to an industry insider who spoke to Puck News, Feehan clashed significantly with leading stars Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) and Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton)—both of whom wield substantial creative power as executive producers on the series.

The Battle for Creative Control

The friction on set reportedly wasn’t about the storyline, but rather how the ship was being steered. Sources clarified that Hauser and Reilly were highly critical of Feehan’s day-to-day management style on set, rather than the actual scripts he penned for the highly anticipated follow-up series.

The division ran all the way to the top of the franchise’s empire. Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and his longtime producing partner David Glasser were also reportedly “not vibing” with Feehan’s operational workflow, leaving the showrunner completely isolated.

“Chad won’t be returning should the show be picked up for a second season,” a source confirmed to Page Six, sealing the fate of the show’s leadership.

The Dutton Ranch spin-off project was initially announced in the wake of Yellowstone concluding its historic flagship run in December 2024. But while the setting has transitioned, the franchise’s reputation for backstage chaos has clearly followed it.

A Franchise Magnet for Drama

Unfortunately, explosive backstage politics are entirely par for the course within the Sheridan universe, as the franchise is already haunted by several major historic scandals. From Kevin Costner’s highly publicized, messy fallout with Taylor Sheridan that derailed the flagship series, to years of compounding production delays, and even a bizarre real-world legal battle between Sheridan and Cole Hauser over competing coffee brands, the future of the multi-million dollar property has seemed in doubt more than once. Yet, Paramount continues to forge aggressively ahead, turning the Dutton saga into an unstoppable television empire.

Looking Toward a Post-Paramount Future

Despite losing its showrunner right out of the gate, Dutton Ranch successfully made its long-awaited premiere on May 15, 2026. The series features Hauser and Reilly anchoring the new Texas-based landscape, flanked by a powerhouse tier of Hollywood royalty that includes Oscar nominees Annette Bening and Ed Harris. While the drama continues to churn behind the camera, it hasn’t slowed Taylor Sheridan down in the slightest. The hyper-prolific creator has already secured a massive, future-shaping development deal with NBCUniversal, set to trigger the moment his current mega-exclusive agreement with Paramount officially expires in 2028.

For now, the Dutton family continues to survive the flames—both onscreen and off. Do you think the showrunner’s sudden exit will negatively impact a potential second season, or is Taylor Sheridan fully capable of steering the ship alone?
