Amy Duggar King Reveals ‘Rare and Dangerous’ Health Condition That Has ‘Displaced’ Husband Dillon’s Organs
Amy Duggar King is sharing an update on her husband’s health.
The Counting On alum revealed exclusively to PEOPLE that her husband, Dillon King, has been facing “significant health challenges” in recent weeks.
“After continued pain and concerns that could no longer be ignored, we sought medical attention, only to receive news no one ever expects to hear,” she says. “Dillon has been diagnosed with a severe diaphragmatic rupture — an extremely rare and dangerous condition that has caused vital organs, including his kidney and parts of his digestive system, to shift into his chest cavity.”
According to an article published by the National Institutes of Health, diaphragmatic injuries are relatively uncommon, representing less than 1% of traumatic injuries.
Amy explains that Dillon’s CT scans showed a nearly 4-inch tear in his diaphragm. His right kidney, appendix, colon, and small intestines were also “all displaced.” The reality star said that her husband is hospitalized, and though he is currently stable, his health condition “remains critical.”
“Doctors have made it clear that this is not a quick fix,” she says. The risks are high, the procedures complex, and the recovery uncertain. We are taking this one moment at a time, clinging to hope, prayer, and the wisdom of the medical teams who are now walking this road with us.”
“This has shaken our family deeply,” she continues. “Dillon is a fighter — anyone who knows him knows his strength — but even the strongest among us sometimes face battles we never anticipated.”
Amy tells PEOPLE that she’s now asking for prayers and privacy as their family navigates the “long and complicated journey” ahead.
“We will share more as we’re able, but for now, our focus is on Dillon’s health, our family’s faith, and the fight in front of us,” she adds.
The former 19 Kids and Counting star first hinted at her husband’s health woes on April 3 while celebrating Dillon’s birthday on Instagram.
“Happy Birthday to my favorite person on the planet!” she wrote alongside a series of photos, including one of Dillon lying in a gurney. “Y’all I adore this man! Dax has the best dad on the planet and he’s so loved by so many family and friends!”
“Normally we’d be celebrating in a huge way but currently we are facing some possible life threatening medical concerns,” she continued. “Today I’d like to ask for some prayers on his behalf. I know God has him, but we welcome the prayers!! I can’t think of a better gift for him!”
Amy concluded her post by addressing her spouse, “Dillon we can get through anything together.”
