There’s no doubt that being a mom to four kids under the age of 3 is a major challenge. No one would blame Katey Duggar for taking whatever shortcuts she can to survive this chaotic time in her life. But this time, her newest mom hack is raising quite a few eyebrows after she shared the way she feeds both of her twin daughters at the same time.
Katey shared a photo of feeding time on her Instagram.
Though the photo has since expired from Katey’s Instagram Stories, it was captured by fans on Reddit, who shared it to discuss.
Here, we can see 3-month-old twins Elsie and Emma sitting in a seat that fits two babies, each with a bottle propped up in some sort of device that holds it in their mouths – something that Katey shared makes their lives “1000x easier.”
“I use this seat for the twins multiple times a day!!” she added.
Critics didn’t waste time calling the device she was using ‘unsafe.’
People don’t always agree on Reddit, so it was surprising to see that just about everybody did this time when they decided this was a pretty unsafe way for a parent to feed their babies.
“I understand how stressfull life with 2 toddlers and 2 babies, but this device is not safe. What if the baby chokes?” one person wrote.
Another commenter added, “Bottle propping is not safe at all! I get parenting twins is hard, but it’s really not worth risking their life.”
“I didn’t have twins but feeding your baby milk is so personal. It’s bonding and connection,” someone else chimed in. “This is ‘feed them and leave them.’ No wonder the kids of this cult have issues.”
It looks like Katey added an accessory to the babies’ seats that may be dangerous.
In her post, Katey was shouting out the seat that the girls are in – not whatever accessory that’s holding their bottles in place. Looking at the product’s Instagram account, which Katey linked to on her Stories, it appears it doesn’t come with the bottle holder keeping Elsie and Emma’s milk in place, and most moms appear to be holding the bottles themselves while their babies eat.
Bottle propping is widely regarded as an unsafe practice.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against bottle propping – whether your baby is a twin or a singleton.
As WebMD points out, there are several risks that come with the practice, including choking, possible tooth decay from milk sitting in the baby’s mouth for too long, and possible ear infections.
