‘Bringing Up Bates’ Erin Bates’ Husband Shares Update After Postnatal Seizure and Septic Shock Hospitalization

Erin Bates has shown signs of recovery, days after suffering a “lengthy and severe seizure” as well as septic shock following the birth of her seventh child.

On Saturday, Chad Paine— the husband of the Bringing Up Bates star— provided another update on Erin, who has been in the Intensive Care Unit for over five days “extremely weak and half conscious.” Chad posted a video of Erin laying in her hospital bed kissing her newborn baby, Henry (who has been in the NICU since his August 25 birth).

“With tears in our eyes, we are praising the Lord that we are on the road to recovery,” Chad wrote. “Your prayers have definitely touched heaven.”

Erin first went to the ICU after giving birth to Henry after she developed a severe UTI and kidney infection. The infections put Erin into septic shock. Although Chad told fans that Erin had been getting better, she suffered a severe seizure on Wednesday night, causing Chad to write that he and Erin’s family were “back in a place of heartache, uncertainty and tears” regarding Erin’s prognosis.

Chad’s update was much-more positive than his previous posts about Erin; however, it appears that the ‘Bringing Up Bates’ star is still in fragile health. According to an update given on Sunday morning by Erin’s pastor, she is still not able to move one of her legs. The pastor, who apparently visited Erin in the hospital on Saturday, also gave more details about the very serious seizure Erin had on Wednesday.

“She’s very, very weak, but she has use of both her hands and she’s able to talk,” he said. “Yesterday afternoon, she seemed better than we’d seen her in days. But she has one leg that will not work.” The pastor went on to reveal that the seizure Erin had was a grand mal seizure that caused her to seize for 15 minutes. “Four people [were] holding her down, but you know, when you see her in the hospital, she has a glow about her still,” he said.

In the video posted on Saturday, Erin is not opening her eyes but is conscious and snuggling baby Henry, who, at one point in the video, smiles when his mother kisses him. “Two miracles laying in that bed! So thankful to God!” Erin’s parents, Gil and Kelly Jo Bates, wrote in the comment section of the post. “Bawling! The sweetest video, praising the Lord for answered prayers!” wrote Erin’s sister Josie Bates Balka. “We’re continuing to lift you up in prayer as you recover. Love you guys so much!” “His little smile has me tearing up,” wrote Katie Bates Clark. “So thankful for answered prayers.” Some of the Duggar girls— who grew up with the Bates family— also provided well wishes to Erin. “Praise the Lord! Been thinking about y’all and praying for you!” wrote Jill Duggar Dillard.

Erin’s sister Michaela had been in Florida— where Erin and her family reside– helping to care for Henry in the NICU while Erin and Chad were unable to. On Saturday, Erin’s brother Lawson Bates posted on social media that he and his family were heading to Florida to be with Erin and her family. “Caught the red-eye to Florida,” he wrote. “Please say a prayer for my sister Erin!”

Erin in the third-eldest of Gil and Kelly Jo’s 19 children. She appeared on both of the Bates’ Family’s reality shows— ‘Bringing Up Bates’ and United Bates of America. In addition to Henry, Erin and Chad are the parents of six other children– Charles, Brooklyn, Everly, Holland, Finley and William. Erin has struggled with her health for years. Before her first son, Charles, was born in 2015, Erin suffered three miscarriages, which she has said were likely due to a blood clotting disorder she has. In 2019, Erin and Chad spoke to People after being told Erin’s health issues may prevent them from having any more children after their fourth-born, Holland.

“After consulting with our doctor, we realized having another baby was not going to be in our future. It was sad, just because we both really love kids, but I knew Erin’s health was the biggest priority, and we were overwhelmingly grateful for the four little blessings God has already given us,” Chad said at the time. “We were content knowing that God sometimes has a different plan than our own.”

In 2021, Erin had multiple surgeries due to ruptured cysts, resulting in her having one of her ovaries fully removed, and the other partially removed. Despite her health issues, the ‘Bringing Up Bates’ star went on to have three more babies after Holland at a very fast pace. Daughter Finley was born in January 2022. Less than two years later, Erin and Chad welcomed son William (prematurely) in October 2023. Less than 22 months later, they welcomed their newest son Henry.
