Bringing Up Bates: How Are Michaela Bates & Brandon Keilen Today?
Michaela and Brandon have been busy sharing vlogs over the past few weeks. The Bringing Up Bates stars recently uploaded YouTube videos with some of the younger Bates where they make hand and footprint crafts, draw a shark, and even make marbled gift jars. Many are also impressed by the married couple and believe that they would do great as elementary school teachers. Some fans also think that Michaela’s close relationships with her younger siblings played a significant role in why she won her second “Biggest Heart Award” during their annual “I Love You Day.”
Michaela & Brandon Suffer Heartbreaking Loss
Michaela and Brandon recently took to IG Stories to share heartbreaking news for the fans. According to Michaela, her sister-in-law, Heather Keilen, just passed away. The Bringing Up Bates star said that she only knew her for eight years and that they lived on opposite sides of the country. Due to this, they didn’t get to see each other very often.

But Michaela Bates Keilen is thankful for all the time they spent together. “Loss is painful but knowing that Heather is at peace in our Savior’s presence is comforting, she added. It was also revealed that Heather Keilen died in a car accident. Many members of the Keilen family have also paid tribute to the mother of three.
Bringing Up Bates: Michaela Bates’ Adoption Process
The Bates Family has two new members. Eldest daughter Michaela Keilen and her husband of nearly 10 years, Brandon, announced Saturday on their YouTube channel that they’ve become foster parents. The Bringing Up Bates stars shared in a video posted to YouTube that they recently became foster parents to “two sweet foster children.” The couple, who had been trying to become parents through adoption, shared that they now have two boys.
“We have two little boys now — a 3-year-old and a newborn — and we don’t know what the future holds here, but we’re taking it a day at a time and enjoying the foster experience,” Brandon shared in their video. We’ve been praying for years that God would provide a way for us to have children and neither of us saw this coming. All of a sudden, we’re a family of four,” added Brandon.
The couple didn’t share how long they’ve had the boys, but did describe Brandon receiving the call from his pastor, who told them that the children were in need of a foster home. “Looking back I feel like it was such a gift because I was with Mama Jane when Brandon called me and Papa Bill is just so excited,” Michaela, the second of Gil and Kelly Jo Bates’ 19 children, said in the video. “I was supposed to stay for three days and be with him during his treatments and one of the last things he said to me was, ‘You need to go home and get those babies.’”
Last year, the ‘Bringing Up Bates’ stars posted a video on their YouTube channel detailing their long struggle with infertility, including multiple tests and visits with specialists that were inconclusive.
“I think the deepest valley for me both emotionally and spiritually was in this phase of so many unanswered questions, and one test after the next and not really finding any answers and wanting so bad to be a mom and wondering what is life going to look like, and the emotions were excitement for every announcement you hear but, at the same time, such a deep grief for not being able to join in motherhood,” Michaela said.
