Taylor Sheridan Western Series Already Renewed For 2 More Seasons Will Make Drastic Change In New Episodes

A major change is coming the Clyburns’ way in The Madison season 2.

While the Yellowstone franchise thrives with two new spinoffs, Luke Grimes’ Marshals on CBS and Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s Dutton Ranch on Paramount+, Taylor Sheridan also kicked off an entirely new neo-Western story earlier this year with the Michelle Pfeiffer-led series. The Madison isn’t your typical fare from the prominent producer, as instead of property feuds and political complications, its story is about a family in the middle of the worst loss of their lives.

The Clyburns’ story in The Madison started with the unexpected deaths of Preston (Kurt Russell) and Paul (Matthew Fox) in a helicopter accident, prompting Stacy (Pfeiffer) and the rest of their family to make sense of their new reality in Montana. Not unlike the majority of the projects in the Sheridanverse, the show was an immediate hit, with its sophomore year already filmed before an official renewal was announced. That said, when The Madison season 2 returns, it will be without Fox, who is not reprising his role as Paul.

Speaking with Gold Derby during an FYC event for the series, Fox expressed his excitement about what comes next for Stacy and her family’s story. Beyond that, however, he teases that The Madison season 2 will be different in one key aspect. Read his full quote below:

“I think Season 2 is going to be a little bit lighter and more humor involved.”

For context, just a day after The Madison season 1 finale aired, Fox himself confirmed that he won’t be back as Paul in season 2. At that time, he believed that his character had already served his purpose and there’s no more compelling stories left to tell about him. Of course, there’s an argument against that, considering how the series’ debut year planted plot seeds of exploring more of his personal heartbreak over the unexpected death of his wife.

Paul’s The Madison season 2 absence is disappointing, as there’s clear interest in learning about his story, including more of his bond with Preston. Perhaps with season 3 already confirmed, Fox will change his mind and eventually reprise the role. For now, however, the younger Clyburn brother won’t be part of what potentially could be a less heavy outing for The Madison. It’s worth noting that production for its sophomore year has long wrapped, so it isn’t impossible to think that Fox would know what goes down on it despite not appearing in any of them.

The pivot for The Madison season 2 to be lighter doesn’t mean that it will abandon its original premise, which is the examination of grief and human resilience. Its debut year had several comedic scenes, which offered levity during the Clyburns’ darkest days. However, being able to laugh and find joy in living again is part of the journey of moving forward, so this makes sense. It’ll be curious, however, how it’s executed for the series.
