Dutton Ranch Episode 6’s Shocking Death Explained

Dutton Ranch episode 6 ended with a shocking death, but it went sideways from the original plan and victim. As Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and the 10-Petals’ cowboys tag a new herd of black angus cattle, Beth Dutton’s (Kelly Reilly) business partnership with Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) scores their first client.

Although shady things are afoot at the 10-Petals Ranch, Beth and Rip have cast their lot in and bet their futures on an alliance with Beulah Jackson. Rip’s job as foreman to get the 10-Petals bunkhouse in order was complicated by infighting among the ranch hands. The tension and violence surround the disappearance of Wes Ayers (Nakoa DeCoite).

In Dutton Ranch episode 6, Rip learned that Wes Ayers was the body he found on his property, and that the ranch hand was killed by Rob-Will Jackson (Jai Courtney). Unbeknownst to the 10-Petals Ranch, however, Rob-Will broke out of rehab and returned to Rio Paloma. Worse, Rob-Will had murder on his mind, leading to another dead body.

Chet’s Dutton Ranch Episode 6 Death & Who Was Supposed To Die Instead

Rob-Will set up Chet (Hart Denton) to kill his adopted brother, Joaquin Reyes (Juan Pablo Raba), in Dutton Ranch episode 6. Chet was Rob-Will’s partner in crime and his only friend at the 10-Petals Ranch. Chet also wanted revenge on Joaquin for firing him after Rip replaced him as the ranch foreman.

Rob-Will bought guns and preyed on Chet’s animosity towards Joaquin, as well as his loyalty to Rob-Will and the 10-Petals as their home that’s “rightfully ours.” Chet was simply supposed to find Joaquin and kill him, but it all went awry. Chet shot Joaquin in the hand and took too long airing out his grievances. Chet was subsequently shot dead by Miguel (Berto Colon), one of Beulah’s lieutenants. Rip was on his way to the Jacksons’ house for a drink with Joaquin when he heard the gunshot. Joaquin needed medical attention, but didn’t want to go to the hospital because the Sheriff would be alerted. Instead, Rip drove Joaquin to Everett McKinney (Ed Harris). Before the vet patched up Joaquin’s hand, however, Rip got the answers he needed that Rob-Will killed Wes Ayers.

With Chet dead, no one at the 10-Petals knows that Rob-Will sent him after Joaquin, or that Beulah’s drug addict son is back in Rio Paloma. Nothing links Chet’s death to Rob-Will as a result. As far as Joaquin and Miguel knew, Chet went after Reyes for revenge and paid the price.

What Is Rob-Will’s Master Plan For 10-Petals Ranch?

Rob-Will sending Chet to kill Joaquin illuminates the lifelong hatred between Beulah Jackson’s sons. Rob-Will resents Joaquin for many reasons, from having their mother’s confidence to his latest grudge: Joaquin sending Rob-Will to rehab far away from Rio Paloma. As Beulah’s biological son, Rob-Will stands to inherit the 10-Petals Ranch, but his many mistakes with drugs and alcohol seemingly disqualify him. Rob-Will does not want Beulah to choose Joaquin instead. However, Rob-Will doesn’t know that Beulah hesitates to officially crown Kino as her heir, for reasons she has not fully revealed.

Joaquin surviving Rob-Will’s assassination attempt changes what Jackson will do next. Rob-Will’s original plan was clean: Chet kills Joaquin and then dies himself. Rob-Will was likely counting on Beulah’s bodyguards to take Chet out, clearing the way for Rob-Will’s triumphant return as sole heir to the 10-Petals. How Rob-Will’s daughter, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind), factors into his schemes also isn’t clear. Now, Rob-Will faces a tougher road to take control of his family’s ranch in Dutton Ranch. Joaquin is still an obstacle, as is Rip, whom Rob-Will knows replaced him as the 10-Petals foreman. Somehow, Rob-Will has to circumvent his adopted brother and coax his mother to give him what he wants. Perhaps this will involve another murder attempt.
