Dutton Ranch episode 3 introduces a surprise mystery villain who could make life miserable for Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). The Dutton Ranch’s main opposition to their burgeoning cattle and beef business is the 10-Petals Ranch and its owner, Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), who Beth calls the “Grizzly in Gucci.”
In Beulah Jackson and the 10-Petals Ranch, Dutton Ranch explores parallels to the now-defunct Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Similar to the late John Dutton (Kevin Costner), Beulah is a generational rancher running an outfit plagued by conflict and violence. Beulah is also concerned about her family’s legacy and, like John, she doubts her scions are worthy of inheriting the 10-Petals. Beulah Jackson is the big boss of the 10-Petals as far as her cowboys and employees are concerned. This also goes for her alcoholic son, Rob-Will (Jai Courtney), and rebellious granddaughter, Oreana Lynn (Natalie Alyn Lind). However, there’s someone unseen that Beulah answers to in Dutton Ranch.
Dutton Ranch Has A Mystery Villain Tied To Beulah Jackson & 10-Petals

In Dutton Ranch episode 3, Beulah Jackson receives a phone call while she’s on the road. The voice on the other end is male and speaks to Beulah in ways that no one else in the 10-Petals would dare. The mystery man heard about Rob-Will going to rehab and Beulah hiring a new foreman. The voice demands “no surprises” from Beulah.
Although Beulah doesn’t name her caller in Dutton Ranch episode 3, subtitles identify him as “Mariano.” Further, the closing credits list actor Raoul Max Trujillo as “Mariano Reyes.” This sheds new light on the inner workings and Jackson family dynamics at the 10-Petals Ranch.
Beulah’s fixer, Joaquin, identifies himself as “Joaquin Reyes” when he meets Beth Dutton at a Dallas bar in Dutton Ranch episode 3. This means that Mariano Reyes must be Joaquin’s father. Joaquin also tells Beth that Beulah and the Jacksons raised him “like family.” Joaquin also calls Beulah “mom,” and Rob-Will is called his brother. Mariano Reyes could be the power or money behind the 10-Petals. Perhaps he is a Mexican cartel leader, similar to Andy Garcia’s Danny “Gallino” Morrell in Landman. It’s unclear what the relationship between Beulah and Mariano is, but while Jackson is defiant and determined to run the 10-Petals her way, Mariano holds power and sway over her.
Raoul Max Trujillo has numerous movie and TV credits, including in Sicario and Sicario: Day of the Soldado, both of which were written by Taylor Sheridan. Trujillo could appear as Mariano Reyes later in Dutton Ranch season 1. However, Raoul may have just voiced Mariano, and Dutton Ranch could cast a bigger-name actor if and when Mariano appears on-screen.
What Dutton Ranch’s Mystery Villain Means For Beth & Rip

In Dutton Ranch episode 3, Beth and Rip have no clue about the true scope and inner workings of the 10-Petals Ranch. Beth only has an inkling of who the Dutton Ranch is up against after meeting Beulah and Joaquin, who was sent to find out what Beth knows about Rob-Will murdering Wes Ayers (Nakoa DeCoite) in Dutton Ranch‘s series premiere. Beth doesn’t know a thing about Wes’ murder as of Dutton Ranch episode 3. Rip, however, can’t exactly say the same. Rip found Wes’ corpse at the end of Dutton Ranch‘s premiere, and he dumped the body in a mine shaft at the end of Dutton Ranch episode 2. However, Rip doesn’t know who the body belonged to, and he doesn’t want to know.
Unfortunately, Wes’ widow, Whitney (Olivia Rose Keegan), told the Sheriff about her missing husband before she skipped town. This now ties Rip and Beth, by extension, to the Sheriff’s investigation, which could eventually lead to the Dutton Ranch’s land where Wes was killed. Even worse for Rip, he lied and hasn’t told Beth anything about finding and disposing of a dead body. How does this tie back to Mariano? The messier Wes’ murder investigation becomes for Beulah Jackson and the 10-Petals, it could mean Mariano personally intervening. It’s also possible that Mariano has already struck a blow against the Dutton Ranch. After all, how did Beth and Rip mysteriously buy a bull carrying foot-and-mouth disease that has now infected their entire black angus herd? One phone call from Mariano to Beulah Jackson opens up a cavalcade of possibilities in Dutton Ranch. As of now, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler are completely unaware of just who and what they’re really up against in Rio Paloma, but there is an even bigger bad than Beulah Jackson waiting somewhere on that vast Texas horizon.
