Kayce Dutton Sells the Yellowstone Ranch Again in the Marshals Finale

The spinoff series starring Luke Grimes is looking to move ever further away from Yellowstone.

If you’ve been keeping up with Marshals, more power to you. The Yellowstone spinoff starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton is an entirely different kind of show than its beloved predecessor, and not all Sheridan-verse fans are in love with the show’s new direction.

But in between Kayce’s new gig as a U.S. Marshal, a prospective buyer has been hot on his heels to purchase the remaining lot on the Yellowstone Ranch. As we approach the finale on Sunday, May 24, the one question on viewers’ minds is whether Kayce will sell… again.

In the Yellowstone series finale, Kayce worked around a tax loophole and saved his family’s ranch by selling it to Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) for roughly a dollar per acre. Though it was quite a bumpy road getting there, Kayce selling the ranch to the Broken Rock Reservation was a poetic ending that many fans anticipated.

It signaled that the Dutton children were moving on from the burden of their family’s legacy. His sister Beth (Kelly Reilly) relocated to Dillon with her husband Rip (Cole Hauser)—even though they’re now in South Texas on Dutton Ranch. Meanwhile, Kayce and his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) took up residence in a small patch of the Yellowstone Ranch called East Camp.

Then, Marshals flipped the script. The writers killed off Asbille’s character—leaving Kayce and his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) with loads of grief hanging over their heads at the beginning of the spinoff series. So, when a nearby ranch owner named Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey) offered to buy the property and help Kayce move on, the youngest Dutton sibling began the process of potentially selling the last remaining piece of the Yellowstone Ranch.

Will Kayce sell?

“I was on this same porch not too long ago when I sold the Yellowstone,” Kayce tells Tom in Marshals, episode 12. He admits that it wasn’t an easy decision to end that legacy, even if he didn’t really have a choice. “The last few years of my father’s life, he did whatever the Yellowstone needed. But it robbed him of so much,” he continues. “I just know I don’t want to live like that.” Then, Kayce asks Tom to “walk him through it” as the episode ends.

While we already know that Kayce is set to return for a second season of Marshals, it seems that he may move on from the Yellowstone’s legacy even further in the upcoming finale. That, or Dutton Ranch fans might actually see the character move down to South Texas in season 2 for more Yellowstone sequel crossovers with Beth and Rip.

Whatever Kayce decides, it’s sure to shake up everything that his family built once again—even if it feels right for him to sell and move on. We’ll find out for sure when the Marshals finale aires on Sunday.
