Marshals Season 2 Is “An Even Better Season” Promises Yellowstone Spinoff Star In New Release Window Update

Warning: Some SPOILERS lie ahead for Marshals season 1!

As its record-setting debut season gears up to close, Logan Marshall-Green has an encouraging update on Marshals season 2.

The Yellowstone spinoff series follows Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton as he’s recruited by his former US Navy SEAL Senior Chief Cal, played by Marshall-Green, to join a U.S. Marshals team, all while grieving the death of Kelsey Asbille’s Monica. Though garnering mixed reviews from critics, Marshals season 1 has been a major hit for CBS, becoming the second-most-watched broadcast series with over 16 million viewers and quickly getting a season 2 renewal.

Now, in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns for the season 1 finale, Logan Marshall-Green opened up about his Marshals season 2 return. Confirming that they’re “ramping up, not wrapping up” after having begun filming on the next season as of Monday, the Yellowstone spinoff star teased that audiences will be “left with questions” after the finale, but that the show is “answering them pretty steadily in this first episode” as he confirmed when the show will return:

Logan Marshall-Green: It definitely feels like we’re picking up right where we left off, with regards to production, production value, the intensity of the days. It’s a new season, it’s an even better season, in a way…I’ll leave it to the viewers to tune in the Fall to find out…

Marshall-Green’s update echoes his most recent comments about Marshals season 2, in which he said production was beginning the week of the above interview and that the new season would immediately pick up from the debut season’s cliffhanger ending. At the time of writing, the finale already has a few key plot points to expound upon, including Kayce seemingly selling East Camp to the Weaver Ranch, Ash Santos’ Andrea being offered a job back in Washington D.C., Tatanka Means’ Miles being suspended, and Cal revealing the truth of his pancoast tumor diagnosis to Arielle Kebbell’s Belle.

Official plot details for the Marshals season 1 finale, entitled “Wolves at the Door,” say that the episode will see Kayce protecting Gil Birmingham’s Broken Rock chairman Rainwater after an assassination attempt on his life fails, all while Cal and the team try to pinpoint who’s targeting him. The target on Rainwater’s back has been set since the show’s premiere, and should it extend beyond the mining group trying to operate on Broken Rock land, multiple characters could have their fates left in limbo come the finale.

One of the more notable takeaways from Marshall-Green’s latest comments, however, is the promise that Marshals season 2 is going to be “an even better season” than the first. Upon its March 1 debut, the show set an unfortunate new record for the Yellowstone franchise by becoming the worst-reviewed installment, currently holding a 42% approval rating from critics and 27% approval from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Apart from Taylor Sheridan’s original series’ first season, every installment has earned Fresh scores on the platform from critics, with audiences only occasionally being mixed on the proceedings. Yellowstone‘s infamous final season landed a 41% approval rating from viewers, while the prequel 1923 averaged 55% across its two-season run.

Given the original Yellowstone similarly bounced back from early mixed reviews to become a well-loved series, it certainly wouldn’t come as too much of a surprise for Marshals season 2 to improve the spinoff’s reception, now that they know what people are and aren’t enjoying about the show. Plus, with Marshall-Green reaffirming that it will return in the Fall, the neo-Western franchise is going to be alive and well for the next couple of years.
