Carter’s Shocking Future Sets the Stage for a Major Dutton Ranch Shake-Up

Dutton Ranch has subtly set up Carter (Finn Little) leaving Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). Carter moved to Rio Paloma, Texas, with Beth and Rip, but he was sent to high school by Beth to get a formal education despite Carter being 19. Dutton Ranch is now tacitly examining Carter’s entire relationship with the Dutton-Wheelers.

When Carter was introduced in Yellowstone season 4, he was still a very young teenager. Beth took a liking to the orphaned boy because she reminded him of teenage Rip. Carter was brought to the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch and became a ‘low man’ as he learned to be a cowboy. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) was kind to Carter, but Beth and Rip often were not. Rip hated Carter at first and was brutally abusive towards the boy. Beth tried to mother Carter, but she was also publicly cruel to him once when they went clothes shopping. The COVID-19 pandemic and Kevin Costner’s exit caused long breaks between filming Yellowstone season 5, during which Finn Little had a growth spurt so that Carter became a young man.

Does Carter Want To Leave The Dutton Ranch?

Dutton Ranch episode 4 saw Carter make a new friend in Dwight White (Ray McKinnon), an old Texas cowboy who employed Carter as a ranch hand while he skipped school. Dwight was the first cowboy who treated him well and behaved like a role model since John Dutton. Spending time with Dwight made Carter silently consider his future.

Looking at Carter’s story in Dutton Ranch thus far, he lives with Beth and Rip but doesn’t work at the ranch. Instead, Beth treats him like her adopted son, whether or not they went through a legal adoption process. However, Carter is 19 and resents how Beth treats him as if he were still the boy he was when they met years ago in Yellowstone. Carter’s difficult life and limited skills left him with few options other than being a rancher. But he also seems to want to break away from Beth and Rip, who have shown no interest in Carter working at the Dutton Ranch. Beth wants to give him “a better life,” but, to Carter, this just continues how he has had no choice or say in his life.

Carter’s trajectory in Dutton Ranch is riding towards independence. Carter is still dependent on the Dutton-Wheelers, but in fits and starts, and in his moments of quiet rebellion, being free of Beth and Rip seems to be Carter’s true desire. Other than Oreana Lynn Jackson (Natalie Alyn Lind), that is.

Carter & Oreana Are Stuck At Their Family’s Ranches

Carter and Oreana haven’t discussed it with each other in Dutton Ranch, but one of the things they have in common is being trapped in their family’s ranches. Oreana is the granddaughter of Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), the matriarch of the 10-Petals Ranch. Oreana is meant to inherit her family’s 190-year-old legacy, a destiny she outright rejects. Oreana told Beth that her grandmother controls her and won’t let her move out. It’s unclear if Beth drew a parallel to how she parents Carter. When they first met, Oreana challenged Beth about Carter being old enough to make his own decisions, but Dutton disregarded the naked Jackson girl in Carter’s bed.

Oreana’s desire to escape the 10-Petals Ranch is echoed by Carter’s own feelings of being stuck with Beth and Rip. While Carter is grateful for what the Dutton-Wheelers have done for him, they aren’t his real parents or his actual family. It hasn’t even been confirmed if they are his legal guardians, and Carter still keeps his distance from Rip.

Dutton Ranch could be slowly telling the story of Carter and Oreana’s emancipation from their family’s ranches and from being under Beth Dutton and Beulah Jackson’s yoke. Whether Carter and Oreana can escape, either separately or together, remains to be seen.
