Taylor Sheridan’s 5-Part Western Sensation Blindsides Fans With Big News
Paramount+ may as well be renamed to “The Taylor Sheridan Streaming Network” at this point. The screenwriter and producer behind Hollywood hits like Sicario and Hell or High Water has created a vast cinematic universe on TV. In 2026, the newly released Marshals and Dutton Ranch continue the legacy of Sheridan’s neo-western universe, even if they’ve both been subject to mixed reviews. Over the past few years, Sheridan also went back in time, releasing the prequel shows 1883 and 1923, with a third prequel, 1944, on the way. But it’s the series that started it all that’s making an unexpected streaming comeback in 2026.
Eight years after it was first released, Taylor Sheridan’s neo-western sensation, Yellowstone, is back on the streaming charts, seemingly out of nowhere. Beginning in 2018, Yellowstone introduced viewers to the infamous Dutton Family, who own the Yellowstone Ranch, beside the Yellowstone National Park. But, the Duttons are far from simple cattle farmers, as they probably spend more time fighting off threats and killing the competition (I mean, taking them to the train station) than they actually do raising cattle.
Yellowstone was led by Hollywood legend Kevin Costner, and featured now mega-stars, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser (who both lead the new Dutton Ranch spin-off), Luke Grimes (who leads Marshals), Kelsey Asbille, Wes Bentley, Jefferson White, Gil Birmingham, and many more. The core series ran for five seasons before coming to an end in 2024 and opening the doors to potentially dozens of spin-offs. As two of those spin-offs are currently ongoing on the Paramount Network and Paramount+, Yellowstone is also making a comeback on streaming. At the time of writing, Yellowstone is the fourth most popular series on Paramount+ globally. Dutton Ranch holds the top spot, with Marshals in third. Sheridan’s other hit crime thriller, Tulsa King (starring Sylvester Stallone), is also in the Top 10, in ninth place.
‘Yellowstone’s Final Season Could Have Killed the Franchise
Since Game of Thrones‘ disastrous ending, there has been an intense magnification of major shows’ final seasons. The HBO fantasy series crashed and burned with its eighth and final season, and that completely derailed the future of the franchise. Yellowstone very nearly suffered a similar fate. Seasons 1 to 3 of Yellowstone are undoubtedly the best, and Season 4 was still great compared to many other network shows. But, due to a number of factors, Yellowstone‘s final season was a mess, and it made fans turn against the once-beloved series.
That backlash nearly killed the franchise. However, the much-loved prequels and the surviving anticipation for the now-released Dutton Ranch managed to keep Yellowstone‘s head just above water. Add to that Taylor Sheridan’s other hit shows, like Landman, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, and Spec Ops: Lioness, and it feels like Yellowstone has something of a safety buffer for when its final season fell apart.
‘Dutton Ranch’ Is the ‘Yellowstone’ Spin-Off We’ve Been Waiting For
Not every Taylor Sheridan series can emulate the success of Yellowstone (as Marshals has learned the hard way). But Dutton Ranch is as close to great as the franchise has come since Yellowstone‘s quality nosedived. Following Beth Dutton (Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Hauser), the series sees the pair move to Texas to open the eponymous Dutton Ranch. As you might expect from a Taylor Sheridan neo-western, things don’t exactly go peacefully for the duo.
