The Yellowstone sequel and spinoff series follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they start a new life in South Texas. Taylor Sheridan is an executive producer, but did not create, direct, or write the series. It was created by Chad Feehan, who also serves as the showrunner, executive producer, and he wrote the first episode, which had the biggest original series debut in Paramount+ history with 12.9 million global viewers in its first seven days. Now, Paramount+ has announced that Dutton Ranch is returning for season 2. Along with the record-breaking streaming numbers, with 2.9 million total viewers for the two-episode debut on Paramount Network, it had the biggest series premiere on cable since 2023. It is also ranked as the #1 cable entertainment telecast for adults between the ages of 18 and 49 and for all total viewers, along with being the #1 streaming series per Nielsen’s preliminary data during the week of May 11.
The fact that Dutton Ranch was just renewed for season 2 should satisfy fans of the Yellowstone franchise, since it means the show’s most promising future is now set in stone. While the critically acclaimed crime movies Hell Or High Water,Sicario, and Wind River put the TV showrunner Taylor Sheridan on the map, it was the writer/director’s 2018 debut show, Yellowstone, that made him an industry legend.
The Neo-Western follows the Dutton family’s struggles to hold onto their massive, sprawling titular ranch, with the family of amoral billionaires frequently resorting to illegal means to keep the land. The prequels 1883 and 1923 fleshed out the history of the ranch, while Yellowstone’s five seasons saw control of the setting move from family patriarch John Dutton to his nefarious son Jamie and, eventually, his younger son, Kayce. Although Kayce sold almost all the ranch in the Yellowstone series finale, that wasn’t the end of the Dutton family saga. Kayce’s work as a US Marshal in Montana continued in the appropriately titled CBS procedural sequel Marshals, while his sister Beth and her longtime love interest Rip relocated to the titular setting of the show’s second sequel spinoff, Dutton Ranch. Debuting in Summer 2026, Dutton Ranch was a huge hit on Paramount+.
Dutton Ranch Has Been Renewed For Season 2
As such, it was a big relief when, in mid-June 2026, Dutton Ranch was finally renewed for a second season. The wait for this renewal might not sound like a big deal, since many shows linger in proverbial purgatory for months before their eventual renewals. However, anyone familiar with Sheridan’s current position in the TV industry would know why the wait for Dutton Ranch season 2’s confirmation worrying. As of June 2026, Sheridan currently has a whopping ten upcoming seasons of TV on the way, including two-season renewals for The Madison, Tulsa King, and the other Yellowstone sequel, Marshals. Since Tulsa King’s spinoff Frisco King received a straight to series order, and Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, and Special Ops: Lioness are all still going strong, it was fair for viewers to wonder what the holdup was with Dutton Ranch.
While there is word of Yellowstone’s next spinoff 6666 potentially arriving sometime in the future, Dutton Ranch‘s season 2 renewal means the Neo-Western franchise no longer runs the risk of ignoring its most promising current storyline for the sake of a new series. While Beth and Rip’s sequel isn’t perfect, Dutton Ranch is the spinoff that comes closest to recapturing Yellowstone’s original appeal.
Dutton Ranch Season 2 Is Yellowstone’s Most Exciting Franchise Future
Beneath all its grit and macho posturing, Yellowstone was effectively another soapy show about scheming rich people behaving badly, like a modern spin on Dynasty or Dallas. Marshals, in contrast, is a straightforward cop show, and the fact that Kayce considered selling the last portion of the original ranch in the spinoff’s season 1 finale makes it even less connected to the original show’s storyline. Dutton Ranch has both the eponymous ranch setting and the amoral main characters of Yellowstone, and the show’s story is primarily concerned with its antiheroes getting one over on their many enemies in the ranching business. As such, Dutton Ranch is effectively Yellowstone 2.0 in storytelling terms.
Dutton Ranch’s Season 2 Fate Proves Taylor Sheridan’s TV Empire Is Almost Unstoppable

While an unprecedented ten seasons of TV might have already sounded impressive, the fact that Dutton Ranch was finally renewed proves that Sheridan’s TV empire is all but unstoppable. Admittedly, Mayor of Kingstown is getting a truncated final season of only eight episodes, meaning not all the writer/director’s projects can last forever. However, for Yellowstone fans, the fact that Dutton Ranch will keep Beth and Rip’s shared story going is the best news viewers could hope for from the franchise.
